I’ve found that the most effective counseling takes a team approach: I am knowledgeable about mental health treatment, but you are the expert on you. We’ll explore your concern together and find a solution you are comfortable with. I do virtual sessions only. Check out more on my website! https://www.michaelburroughsllc.com/

I specialize in meeting with people experiencing anxiety, attention difficulty, impulsive/risk-taking behaviors, depression, and interpersonal conflict. My first priority is in collaborating with my clients to create spaces where change feels possible. I am especially attentive to the ideas of reducing stigma surrounding mental health care, trust associated with strict confidentiality, and increasing motivation using strengths- and evidence-based techniques. I bring an integrative approach to therapy, combining aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, CBT, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and DBT (including Mindfulness) to find the best way forward for each client. I have experiences working with clients of all ages, across different clinical settings. I spent much of the past decade living and working overseas, managing an Eco-Lodge in northern Malawi, teaching English at a hagwon in South Korea, and working remotely as a therapist from Brazil. I enjoy playing basketball, reading (mostly sci-fi!), rock climbing, and managing far too many podcast subscriptions.

Living with anxiety, depression, or unresolved trauma can make even simple tasks feel exhausting and leave you feeling disconnected from yourself. In therapy, we’ll gently explore the root of your struggles, identify patterns that keep you stuck, and build healthy coping strategies. My goal is to help you feel grounded, empowered, and free to create a life that feels meaningful and truly your own. I blend CBT to challenge unhelpful thoughts, person-centered therapy to create a safe, validating space, and narrative therapy to help clients rewrite the stories shaped by anxiety, depression, and trauma—empowering them to reclaim control, build resilience, and move toward healing with clarity and confidence. I understand no two individuals are the same, and tailor our sessions together to address challenges unique to you. We will work together to understand the root cause of your struggles and address them with strategies, helping you get closer to the life you’ve always wanted. Step Into Your Greatness

Hello, and welcome. I’m a licensed clinical social worker who works with adults navigating anxiety, OCD, and a history of trauma. I know how exhausting it can be when your mind keeps pulling you away from the life you actually want to live. My approach is active and collaborative. I won't just sit back and listen. I often bring humor into sessions too—it's a natural way to soften rigidity, gain perspective, and open the door to change. Together, we'll draw on evidence-based, trauma-informed methods, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and other cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based approaches, shaped around what actually works for you. Where it's helpful, we'll also bring in mindfulness and somatic techniques to build your ability to get present, even in moments that feel hard. At the center of this work is curiosity and self-compassion: learning to meet your thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them. That shift tends to be what opens things up—clearer self-understanding, more effective ways of coping, and the courage to make choices that move you toward living well.

As a counselor, my professional identity is one of authenticity, curiosity, and empathy. I care deeply about helping my clients improve their lives. I believe that starts with the two of us forming a genuine connection so that I can best understand your personality, your worldview, and the problems you are facing – the world can be a tough place and we all have times when we could use someone to listen and understand us. I will repeatedly check in with you to assess your goals for therapy and make sure that we are making progress towards meeting those goals. In our sessions, I will use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you identify and reduce the types of thinking that can lead to negative emotions. I will also incorporate other techniques such as mindfulness meditation that many clients find useful. Together, we will work as a team to confront the issues that are troubling you. I received my BS in Biology from Duke University and my MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. I've also been a research assistant in Princeton University's departments of social psychology and neuroscience. I try to stay up to date with current research and use only empirically validated modalities with my clients.

My clinical practice mainly consists of fellow queer and neurodivergent folx who struggle with complex trauma. Common concerns include self-abandonment through people pleasing, exploring gender/sexual identity, executive dysfunction, immense shame/guilt, perfectionism, identifying community supports, and processing underlying traumatic experiences. My clients often come into session looking to better understand who they are and what really works for them. Many times they feel so detached from themselves and their own bodies that it has been hard to even know what they want from life or who they are. I am EMDR trained and primarily work with clients to map out and process traumatic and other stressful experiences to improve self-understanding, self-acceptance, and self-compassion. My goal is to help people feel more connected with themselves, their needs, and find approaches that help reduce overall distress and improve relationships. I understand that therapy may be new experience for you or you may have had negative experiences with therapy in the past. Nevertheless, I strive to be mindful of and responsive to the individual needs of my clients. I am open to feedback and happy to adjust approaches as needed. Please feel free to reach out. I would love to work with you!

Working with me means gaining practical coping skills and tools you can start using right away. I rely on my background in psychology to implement cognitive and behavioral changes. I use scientifically supported methods like CBT, DBT, exposure, and mindfulness skills to create real, lasting changes. Our sessions will go beyond exploration and reflection — therapy with me is not 'just talking.' It feels great to vent, but it feels even better to have a path forward. I will gently confront and challenge you when I notice you might be holding yourself back. We all have a tendency to lean into old patterns and unproductive coping skills, especially when it’s all you know. I’m here to hold you accountable and help you grow in a supportive, respectful, and nonjudgmental way.

You deserve an authentic therapist that doesn’t rely on gimmicks and mind tricks. We believe in high-quality services (just like you would expect when paying for childcare, dental work, car maintenance, or pizza). We help you through your mental health journey in the way that works for you— because that’s the respect you deserve. Our online counselors in North Carolina are authentic people and know what it’s like to sit in the client’s seat. Using that experience and our knowledge, we provide you with what clients have proclaimed “the best counseling” they have received. Here’s the truth about therapy: you’re what really matters. And that’s exactly why we at C&C Betterworks have decided to put the focus back on you. You often feel like the odd one out. You don’t want to feel that way in therapy, too! With us you do not have to hide anything. With our online counseling in North Carolina, we encourage you to be authentic in therapy, no matter what that looks like. Let’s keep it real. You bring your whole, true self. And we’ll bring our whole, true selves to every session The only thing that matters is that you’re being the real you. No psychology jargon or “how does that make you feel?” here. We speak human, not bullshit. Masking is exhausting. Therapy is the last place that you want to hold it in. Your sessions are a mask-free zone. Autonomy + Accountability = Results Your autonomy is respected- meaning you choose the direction your mental health treatment takes. People often hear “just go to therapy” or “focus on healing” but not enough is said about how complex that process can feel. Healing can feel uncertain. You may know something needs to shift but not know where to start. It can feel like progress and setbacks are happening at the same time. It can also feel like wanting support but not yet having the words for it. If that sounds familiar you are not alone. As a Holistic Mental Health Therapist I support clients in reconnecting with themselves and building a sense of safety in mind body and spirit. I integrate evidence based practices with mindfulness breathwork meditation and trauma informed yoga to support nervous system regulation and emotional grounding. You do not have to figure it all out alone. There is space here for your story and your process.
