Therapists for college students near New York University
Welcome! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works with adults navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma, particularly experiences related to family of origin and attachment. While I work with adults of all ages, I have a special interest in supporting emerging adults - including college, graduate, and medical students - as they manage the emotional and relational challenges that can arise during these stages of life. I support clients in addressing current life challenges while also seeking to answer questions about why these challenges exist in the first place. I do this through a collaborative, relational, and trauma-informed approach that blends deeper insight with practical support. Drawing from psychodynamic and attachment-based work, along with CBT, DBT, and mindfulness, I help clients understand patterns, regulate emotions, and build skills that support meaningful, lasting change. Starting therapy can feel uncertain, and it’s completely normal to have questions or mixed emotions. Please know you don’t have to figure it out on your own. I aim to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and understood. If you’re considering therapy, I invite you to reach out to see if we would be a good fit.

I work with college students across New York State through video and phone therapy. Many students I see feel overwhelmed by anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, relationship stress, procrastination, or uncertainty about the future. Even high achieving students can feel stuck, exhausted, or disconnected from themselves. Sometimes you need space to vent, process, and feel heard. Other times, you want concrete strategies and a clearer path forward. I believe therapy should be both supportive and active, a place where you can talk honestly about what’s weighing on you while also building practical tools that help you feel better outside of sessions. As a Level 3 certified TEAM CBT therapist, I take a collaborative, goal oriented approach that helps students better understand the patterns keeping them stuck while building skills to manage emotions, improve confidence, and create meaningful change. The insights and strategies you gain in therapy can continue supporting you long after sessions end. If you’re ready to feel more grounded, capable, and connected, reach out for a free 15 minute consultation to see if we’d be a good fit.
Do you feel stuck in an exhausting cycle of trying to feel more in control of your life? Maybe you are tired of feeling like the friend who gives more than you get back. Or maybe you are constantly chasing perfection and still finding new flaws to criticize. These patterns can take a toll and often show up as anxiety, disordered eating, low mood, or feeling disconnected from yourself. If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and there is a way forward. I’m Nicole, a therapist with training in both mental health and nutrition. I take a holistic and practical approach that helps students understand what fuels these patterns and build the tools needed to break them. I use evidence-based methods like CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing to help you work toward self-acceptance, balance, and a life that feels less overwhelming. In our work together, you can expect a safe, supportive space where you can be honest without fear of judgment. You do not have to be “all in” right away. I meet you exactly where you are and help you take steps that feel doable and meaningful. If you want to feel more grounded, more confident, and more at peace in your body and your life, I am here to help you get there. Recovery is possible, and you do not have to take the journey alone.
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to connect! You likely wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t struggling with the pressures of life, and the demands placed upon you from both internal and external sources. I would like to take the time to acknowledge that where you are in your journey to find help is challenging and I am here to make that process as smooth as I am able. The first thing to know about me is that I attempt to live my life in an authentic manner that honors my truth, self-identity, and worldview; while helping others discover what that may look like for them. Some of the roles I fill in my life are husband, father, son, sibling, friend, mentor, and helper. While each of these roles is unique and requires special attention, they each contribute to my passion in life and therapeutic approach. I began my journey to becoming a therapist almost a decade ago, when I realized my previous career in healthcare management was not aligned with my passions and purpose in life. I found myself running businesses for other people who were focused on profits and growth, but lacking a focus on people and connection, which is where my heart finds fulfillment. It was then I decided to change my career path and further my knowledge in the human experience. With the goal of learning how to connect with others in a meaningful way that can lead to growth and healing, I pursued my education and licensure as a clinical mental health counselor. Through a person centered approach, which employs a wide variety of evidence based interventions, I work with my clients to achieve their goals in a way that fits them individually. I believe that every person is unique and can benefit from unconditional acceptance and compassion. By creating this environment of acceptance, we are able to identify areas that you want to change and implement strategies tailored to your experience. I look forward to meeting you and having the opportunity to help you along your journey. Contact information: jwhitlock@truedirectionmhc.com or Phone: 845-264-2477

Whatever you're struggling with, I'm not here to save or cure you. What I can offer is support, companionship, guidance, and practical tips as you engage the simple and difficult process of dressing wounds, remembering how to draw in nourishment, and reorienting toward your own ‘true north.’ The long-term goal of this work is not to help you become more 'well-adjusted,' but more fully yourself in a world that often makes that difficult. It may be hard to hear, but that deep-in-your-bones longing really matters. You may have forgotten it, ridiculed it, buried it for any number of very sensible reasons; but I assure you it is waiting patiently for your return. That longing, that certain something that you can't seem to find anywhere? That is yours to grow into. And I would propose that that becoming, that filling in of the larger You, is essential not only to your own sanity, but to the health of all Life. In that spirit I may challenge you to look at the ways that you are evading the responsibility of becoming. But believe me, I evade too. I will regard you with tenderness and understanding even as I ask you to do the terrifying – trust yourself a little more. Fill your form. I hold a master's degree in mindfulness-based transpersonal clinical mental health counseling from Naropa University, and am licensed to practice professional counseling in New York and Colorado.
As a therapist, I focus on creating a safe, welcoming space where you can be yourself and work through life’s challenges at your own pace. I have a background in supporting clients through a range of challenges, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and trauma. When I’m not working, you’ll find me petting my cats (Avo & Loki), getting out in nature, being with loved ones, or getting lost in an art project. As a therapist, I tailor sessions to meet the unique needs of each client. In sessions, I focus on creating a good vibe while helping to explore strategies to help you cope or work toward your goals. I am part of a therapy practice called Resolute Mental Health, which has a dedicated team available to help with insurance and administrative support. We also offer psychiatry services at Resolute if a referral is needed! Please feel free to reach out if you would like to work together :)

Great to meet you! I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and I earned my Doctorate in Nursing from Hofstra University. These experiences shaped how I practice today with empathy, patience, and a deep respect for each person’s story. As a Black provider, I understand the importance of feeling seen, heard, and culturally understood in mental health care. I recognize that many individuals, especially within underserved and minority communities, may face unique challenges, stigma, or barriers when seeking support. My goal is for you to leave each session feeling heard, empowered, and more in control of your mental health. My approach to therapy In my practice, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), but more importantly, I focus on meeting you where you are. In our first session, we’ll take the time to talk through what brought you in, what you’ve been dealing with, and what you’re hoping to feel or change. There’s no pressure just a space for you to be open and heard. As we work together, we’ll gently explore how your thoughts, feelings, and experiences are connected. I’ll help you notice patterns that may be keeping you stuck and give you simple, practical tools to challenge negative thoughts and manage overwhelming emotions. My goal is to make this process feel supportive and empowering, so you leave with skills you can actually use in your day-to-day life. What you can expect from me I take the time to really get to know you, not just your symptoms, but your story, your experiences, and what you’ve been through. I understand that everyone’s journey is different, and I approach care with that in mind, especially when it comes to stress, trauma, and life’s challenges. My goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable, heard, and understood. I show up with patience, warmth, and honesty, and I take the time to explain things in a way that actually makes sense. I want you to feel safe, supported, and confident in your care every step of the way

It’s easy to feel stuck or broken when we’ve never had the space to allow all of our emotions, the support to feel them safely, and the perspective to view ourselves with compassion. But when we finally get those things, we get to evolve, grow and change in ways that can be truly profound. My job isn’t to force you to do anything, but to help you learn and build what you’ve needed, so that you can evolve in the ways you want to. If I can count on you to teach me about yourself, about what you feel, and what you're hoping for, you can count on me to listen, and to offer options for how we can pursue your goals. I offer an open approach that includes you in deciding what we do and why, so we can be sure we're working in ways that are both understandable and meaningful to you. So far, this approach has led to clear results for people experiencing PTSD, anxiety, OCD, depression, grief, life transitions, relationship challenges, and recent traumas. As we collaborate, I can provide additional support via methods like EMDR, IFS, EAET, mindfulness, exposure, and body-based therapies. Call or email any time.
I help clients restore the light within and come home to the authentic self they are meant to be. Offering a safe, down to earth, authentic, non judgmental and supportive space to explore & process thoughts and feelings, decrease anxiety, connect with your true values, improve sense of self and increase self esteem, navigate roles and relationships, find your voice and improve communication, set boundaries, cope with emotionally immature parents/family, self-care, burnout, break free from people pleasing and/or perfectionism, improve self compassion, be more present, cope with hurts and stress effectively, sleep better, and stop racing thoughts, reach your goals and dreams, and improve overall sense of self worth and wholeness. I will provide insight and tools to help you get unstuck.
Are your emotions getting the best of you — influencing behaviors that impact your relationships, career, or sense of self? Are worry thoughts or mood shifts becoming harder to manage? Building a life is difficult when strong emotions sweep you away. They can pull you from your values, your goals, and even your identity. Emotion regulation isn’t about getting rid of feelings — it’s about learning how to ride the wave without letting it carry you off course. I’m a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician — the gold standard for DBT providers. I specialize in emotion dysregulation and use evidence-based treatments including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and trauma-informed therapy. I offer adherent DBT individual therapy and DBT skills training in both a group and 1:1 format. Navigating the decision to pursue therapy, whether for yourself or a loved one, is a step in the right direction. If you’re ready, reach out to schedule a free initial 15-minute consultation. On our call, we’ll discuss goals and what our work together could look like.
