With more than six years of experience as a psychotherapist, I specialize in psychodynamic therapy, helping you explore how your past and present experiences shape your thoughts, feelings, and relationships. Whether you're navigating anxiety, ADHD, mood disorders, OCD, or a significant life transition, my goal is to work alongside you in a compassionate, nonjudgmental space where real growth is possible. My practice welcomes adolescents, young adults, and adults alike. Authenticity is at the heart of everything I do. Meaningful therapy begins with a genuine human connection, and I strive to create an environment where you feel safe being fully yourself, without judgment or pretense. By showing up with honesty, curiosity, and openness, I aim to build a therapeutic relationship grounded in trust, collaboration, and real understanding. Therapy with me is a conversation, not a cold process. At the core of my approach is a strong, genuine therapeutic alliance because I believe that kind of connection is what makes meaningful change possible. When we work together, I listen carefully to both your words and what lies beneath them, helping you uncover clarity and strength you may not have known was there. For exploring how your past and present connect, I draw on psychodynamic therapy. To give you practical tools for managing anxiety, ADHD, and mood-related challenges, I weave in techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). When OCD is part of the picture, I use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to help you build distress tolerance and find relief from the cycle of obsessions and compulsions. This blend of insight-oriented exploration and evidence-based tools is designed to support change that lasts. A desire to help others has been part of who I am for as long as I can remember. As I moved into young adulthood, that impulse deepened into genuine fascination with the science and philosophy of the mind. Social psychology captivated me, particularly the landmark experiments of Stanley Milgram, and I found myself drawn to the rich landscape of therapeutic orientations, from psychoanalytic frameworks and humanistic psychology to attachment theory and beyond. That curiosity translated into action through internships and professional experiences that shaped me as a clinician. I gained hands-on skills working with adolescents and adults within the child welfare system and in crisis intervention settings. Providing care to patients across a broad range of cultural backgrounds has profoundly enriched my perspective and deepened my commitment to meeting each person with the attentiveness and respect they deserve. Outside of the therapy room, you'll find me at the gym, training in Muay Thai, or exploring a new restaurant. I also have a longtime love of voice acting and rarely miss a chance to catch a new film. These passions keep me energized and present in my own life, which I believe makes me a better, more grounded presence for you in ours.

Inclusive Psychotherapy in New York for Adolescents, Adults, and Couples/Relationships You worry all the time about being judged by other people. You feel disconnected from your body and, at the same time, feel like it’s all you think about. You question what you say, how your body looks, if you’re doing things “right,” and there are so many times when your mind feels like it’s on a hamster wheel that you can’t stop. You’re on edge all day and sometimes feel like you may be having a heart attack. You don’t feel like you fit in anywhere. You’ve been made fun of for many different parts of who you are. You’ve been called weird or misunderstood at work, in your family, and even in some of your dating relationships. You’ve struggled to find someone who feels like a good fit romantically, and you’re worried there’s something wrong with you. From the start, we want you to know that at Meadow Therapy, we believe you have inherent worth simply by being born. Throughout your life, you’ve learned tools for survival that may no longer feel like they serve you. We can help you shift those survival skills using Mind to Body Psychotherapy. Mind to Body Psychotherapy is a mix of body-based work, exploration of childhood hurts, the neuroscience of emotions/emotional regulation, and other concrete coping skills, that will help you tap into your inner resources. You already have many creative tools you’ve used for survival. One of our goals is to help you move out of survival mode into having a thriving and fulfilling life. We offer inclusive therapy for adolescents and adults, couples therapy, and group therapy. Using Mind-to-Body Psychotherapy, we can help quiet your harsh thoughts, soothe your racing heart, and calm your body. I practice via telehealth in NY, NC, WA, and TX. I specialize in working with adult men and women who may look fine on the outside, but inside you're struggling to get your own needs met, self-doubt, perfectionism, and shame. Gestalt Therapy goes beyond looking only at the cognitive, linear perspective of the person. It demands of the therapist an awareness of the body and how it manifests in the psyche. Through its focus on process rather than content, the patient gains an experiential awareness of how they do what they do and new choices emerge spontaneously. The radical focus on process in Gestalt creative therapy keeps the work alive and full of possibility for both the patient and for my work as a therapist. Melissa Bennett-Heinz obtained her master’s degree in clinical social work from Columbia University (Class of 2002) and is a graduate of Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy in New York City, NY. In addition to her background in Gestalt Therapy, she obtained her bachelor's and master’s degrees from the esteemed conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, in New York City, where she majored in Oboe Performance. Melissa completed cognitive behavioral studies under the tutelage of Dr. William Sanderson. She is a licensed clinical social worker in NY, WA, NC, and TX and has over twenty years of specialized training and experience in PTSD, childhood abuse, mood and anxiety disorders. Melissa brings her background as a classical musician and deep spirituality together in her unique approach in Gestalt's creative and experiential therapy.
We are a group private practice located in the Flatiron neighborhood of Manhattan. We offer individual, couples, and group therapy, as well as trauma treatment using EMDR. We are proudly LGBTQ+ affirmative and specialize in working with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, issues related to race and identity, and more.
The enormous number of stressors we face daily are intense these days: the climate, global unrest and politics, the economy, overwork, isolation, disconnection. All of this is tremendously difficult to manage alone. Anxiety, anger, depression, resentment, boredom; sadness, rage, exhaustion, denial. If you're struggling with any of this -- or any other states that often bring people to therapy, like feeling lost or overwhelmed, relationship issues, lack of direction, emptiness, grief -- it's worth investing the time and effort to get help, get grounded, and find a better path forward. I offer both in-person & remote therapy. If you're suffering, struggling, having difficulty focusing or functioning, you may really benefit from talking with an empathic and skilled therapist (with room for humor). Life is a lot to handle on one's own. If you've ever considered trying to better understand things about your life, the first phone call awaits. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers deep empathic understanding and useful insights that can be grounding and freeing. Therapy expands your capacities and coping strategies while helping you understand yourself & loved ones better. Significant change takes time, but often real relief is experienced just by starting the process. Are you ready to begin?

After receiving my masters in mental health counseling from CUNY Brooklyn College I continued my training at The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP) focusing on psychoanalytic theory and practice. In addition to private practice work, I am conducting research identifying predictive factors for people leaving Orthodox Judaism and have presented at conferences on the topic of disaffiliation within Orthodox Judaism. I am currently pursuing my PhD at Adelphi University School of Social Work. My approach to therapy is primarily psychodynamic in nature. In my practice I take the time to listen closely to your needs and tailor our sessions to meet you where you currently are. Through our work together we will move towards greater understanding of your past and its impact on your life today, this depth of work allows for greater self acceptance and more control over the decisions you make in your life. Our sessions will be spent working to increase your self awareness while strengthening your capacity to fully engage with the world. Together we will expand your window of tolerance by unpacking the feelings and thoughts that bring you discomfort, leading to a more authentic and comprehensive experience of yourself.

Life’s challenges can at times feel overwhelming, especially when anxiety, emotional pain, relationship difficulties, or uncertainty begin to shape how we relate to ourselves and others. In these moments, it can become difficult to feel grounded, connected, or aligned with the life we want to live. Therapy offers an opportunity to better understand these experiences and develop new ways of responding to them with greater awareness, flexibility, and intention. I provide therapy for adults, older adolescents, and couples navigating interpersonal, emotional, and psychological challenges. My approach integrates process-based and behavioral science principles, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to help individuals develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences. I believe therapy should be collaborative, personalized, and responsive to the unique complexities of each person's life. I combine evidence-based care with a thoughtful and compassionate approach tailored to your individual goals and values. If you are seeking support or guidance to better understand your experiences, I welcome the opportunity to connect.

As a mental health counselor, I support adults 18 and older as they move through experiences like anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. Meeting people where they are matters most to me, especially when they feel overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about what comes next. I walk alongside you as you deepen your understanding of yourself and learn gentler ways to work through emotions, and together we focus on building more fulfilling relationships and creating meaningful, lasting change. I believe in meeting each person with empathy, respect, and genuine curiosity, which helps me be a compassionate and collaborative partner in your healing journey. I also understand that reaching out for support can feel difficult – know that you don’t need to have everything figured out before beginning. I’m here to help you get started as you recognize your strengths, feel more confident navigating life's challenges, and create meaningful change. I believe meaningful change begins when people feel genuinely heard, understood, and accepted for who they are. That’s why I ensure a warm, collaborative, and tailored approach to your care, in a nonjudgmental environment where you can show up as yourself, even when you’re unsure how to put what you’re feeling into words. Together, we draw on person-centered therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and solution-focused techniques to help you understand patterns, work through difficult emotions, and develop coping skills that feel realistic for your life. My style is compassionate, down-to-earth, and gently encouraging to meet you where you are, move at a pace that feels comfortable, and tailor our work to your individual needs, experiences, and goals. I grew up in Bangladesh and moved to the United States as a teenager. Learning to find my place in a new culture while staying connected to my Bengali roots gave me a personal understanding of how transitions, identity, language, and family expectations can shape the way we see ourselves and experience the world. I also came to understand how difficult it can be to talk about mental health when you have been taught to stay strong, keep personal struggles private, or put the needs of others before your own. These experiences helped lead me toward counseling and strengthened my commitment to providing care that is culturally responsive, compassionate, and free of judgment. I bring this warmth, openness, and genuine curiosity to each session so my patients feel seen as whole people, not defined by a diagnosis or by what they are going through. When I'm not in session, you'll find me dancing, exploring different parts of New York City, trying new restaurants and cafes, spending time in nature, traveling, or staying active. I also value quality time with friends and family and appreciate the simple moments that help me feel grounded and recharged.

Many of the students I work with seem like they have everything together on the outside, but internally feel anxious, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of who they are. You may be high-achieving, creative, or thoughtful, yet constantly overthinking, second-guessing yourself, struggling with perfectionism, or trying to meet expectations that never fully feel like enough. Over time, it can become exhausting to keep pushing through while quietly carrying stress, pressure, anxiety, or self-doubt on your own. In our work together, we slow things down and explore what’s driving that pressure beneath the surface. Therapy becomes a space to reconnect with your own voice, values, identity, and sense of direction so life begins to feel more grounded, authentic, and emotionally sustainable — not something you constantly have to perform your way through.
I am a psychotherapist in private practice in Manhattan. After finishing a Masters of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania, I completed a four year post-graduate program at the William Alanson White Institute, a psychoanalytic institute in New York City. In my practice, I work with people who are experiencing a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties. I also work with individuals who are interested in improving their understanding of themselves or an aspect of their lives, or who want to be better able to make choices that lead to a sense of fulfillment. My goal is to provide a warm and collaborative relationship in which these topics can be explored. I believe that a successful therapeutic relationship is based on trust and can help bring about growth and change. I offer clinical supervision to psychotherapists in private practice and as part of the William Alanson White Institute's Intensive Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program. I am also an Associate Editor for the academic journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
