College can be a wild mix of freedom and stress... with friend drama, missing home but wanting independence, figuring out what you want to do with your life, financial pressure, loneliness when friend groups shift, and the everyday weight of adult responsibilities starting to pile up. It’s a lot to carry, and it makes sense if you’re feeling stuck, anxious, or unsure how to handle it all. And then, when you’re finally ready to reach out for support, finding a therapist can feel like another full-time assignment. Scrolling through endless profiles feels a little like online dating... you’re reading way too many bios, everyone sounds kind of the same, and you’re left wondering who you’ll actually click with. Add in the stress of costs, schedules, and trying to figure out if they’ll really get what you’re going through, and it’s exhausting before you even start. My goal is to make that step less overwhelming and give you a space where you don’t have to perform, pretend, or have it all figured out.
Hi, I’m Liz! I’m a Licensed therapist (LCSW) and Certified Clinical Sports Social Worker - and founder of MENTL.SESH. I help people accomplish their goals, reconnect with their sense of self, boost confidence, and improve mental fitness by meeting them where they are at in their mental health journeys. Working with athletes, high performers and creatives to manage anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, and challenging life situations are my areas of specialty. Therapy should feel fulfilling and the last thing I want for my clients is for therapy to feel like a chore. I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is the foundation for working toward and achieving therapeutic goals, so I encourage you to feel all the feels, speak your mind, and be yourself in sessions. Therapy with me is a collaborative process and I want any clients who work with me to feel that they are heard and supported. Throughout the therapy process, we will explore both the highs and lows, whether that be through identifying thought patterns, behavioral patterns, current and past experiences, or self-care and coping skills. I'm a firm believer that healing is not linear and acknowledging the good is equally important to living your best life. I aim to have a down-to-earth, strengths-based & integrative approach and will most definitely throw in a few sports and pop culture references, thinking outside of the box, and use humor when appropriate. I received my Master’s in Social Work degree from NYU and have advanced training in, Sports Social Work interventions, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as Trauma Focused -Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, trauma-informed practice, Functional Family therapy, and more.
I'm a person-centered therapist with 15+ years of experience using existential, CBT, Gestalt, and counseling techniques to help you understand your mental health and handle life's stressors-with honesty, empathy, and just the right amount of humor.
I provide experienced, thoughtful care to young adults and college students navigating a wide range of challenges. Whether you’re feeling stuck, anxious, disconnected, overwhelmed, or simply seeking clarity and direction, therapy can help you better understand yourself, shift unhelpful patterns, and create meaningful change. My approach is holistic, warm, and relational. I work collaboratively with each client to uncover the underlying forces shaping their current concerns, helping them identify choice points and reconnect with their strengths. While I work with a wide range of presenting issues, I have a special focus on treating trauma in its many forms. I am especially committed to providing safe, affirming, and effective care for survivors of sexual abuse and assault, and for those carrying the long shadows of past experiences. Regardless of the content, I approach every session with cultural humility, clinical attunement, and deep respect for each client’s lived experience. Mental health symptoms like depression, anxiety, anger, stress, etc., are just that- symptoms! These symptoms come from somewhere in your life, it is your bodies way of telling you "something's not right" or "there needs to be a change here." It is my passion to help one figure out what these symptoms are trying to tell them. After we understand the message we will work to build knowledge, mindsets, skills, and other insights to continue growth and prevent those symptoms from returning or reduce the impact they have on ones life.

*Update 3.26.20: “Social distancing” need not interrupt or delay therapy. Many therapists (including myself) are providing telepsych (remote/distance) sessions via phone or video-call during this uncertain and surreal time. Many of us (including myself) have also lowered our student rates. You don’t need to hire me, but if you’re struggling, please connect with *somebody*. Now back to my regularly scheduled profile;) Hi! So, you’re checking out therapist profiles and considering therapy. Good move. Sometimes, talking with friends and family just isn’t enough. Maybe your mood, anxiety, relationships, use, or self- harm has gotten worse? I’m sorry you’re struggling - though you came to the right place. Really. Therapy can help you feel less overwhelmed and less stuck; break self-destructive relationship patterns and behaviors; take better care of yourself; get substance use under better control; and .... really, anything *you* want to address. For more than 20 years, I’ve worked with adolescents and young adults struggling with school, relationships, ADHD, grief, anxiety, depression, self-injury, substance use, and most anything else you can imagine. I am passionate about my work - most especially my work with your age group. My niece dubbed me a “teenaged grownup”. I didn’t argue:) Here are some “reviews” by real clients: *easy to talk to and approachable *Understands the student experience and WCU culture * she gets what it’s like to be my age in the 2000s * She’s pretty funny sometimes * she treats me like a real person *very accepting and non-judgmental; I can talk with her about super sensitive stuff. *She cares. I trust her. You can learn more about me and my practice on my website. If we decide to work together, know this: I am honest, sincere, and direct. I will never impose my agenda or beliefs on you. I want to help you become the best version of yourself. You needn’t see *me* But, if you’re struggling, please try at least a few sessions with *somebody* The best therapy takes place in a relationship in which you feel heard, respected, and safe. Please don’t settle for anything less. Best, Amy
