Therapists for college students near University of Minnesota
I work with students and young adults who are struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, and dealing with the undergoing changes of going to college or starting full time work. I offer therapy without judgment, I am here to help you challenge the critic in your mind telling you that you're doing everything wrong and that everyone is judging you all the time. I use a mix of cognitive and behavioral approaches to help you learn ways to change how you think about yourself and the world around you. I help by providing a nonjudgmental space and time for you to process through the thoughts that are troubling you and the worries you have. I am available to see clients in Illinois and Indiana.

I provide individual therapy to adolescents and young adults. My approach centers building connections, offering compassion and staying curious about who you are in the past, present and future; helping you become the author to your own story. I want you to feel seen and heard throughout our time working together. Although I welcome working with a range of client concerns, my areas of special focus include navigating disordered eating, eating disorders, body image, shame and perfectionism, identity exploration and anxiety management. I practice from an intersectional feminist, holistic style approach. Many of my clients are in the early stages of exploring their relationship with identity, food and their bodies. Like all of us, I am a work-in-progress but I constantly strive to be culturally and gender affirming and responsive in my daily practice. Prior to becoming a licensed therapist, I worked in community based non-profits throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. I remain passionate about advocating and supporting youth and families during their healing and growth journeys, as well as promoting access to care. You are sitting in therapy watching your therapist's lips move while she tells you for the fourth time that her cousin is gay and just got a “very butch” haircut. You can’t help thinking, “She just doesn’t get it.” He misgenders you, or forgets your partner’s pronouns, she pulls out Food and Mood, and he talks about how apple cider vinegar might be the solution to all your problems. She hasn't lived in a fat body. He hasn’t experienced homophobia or heterosexism from the inside. What initially seemed like a small hill to climb in your relationship has started to feel like a mountain. Maybe she tells you your black top is so slimming. Maybe once he referred to queer people as ‘homosexuals.’ Maybe, when you report your experiences of oppression, she tells you that the other party probably meant well and just wanted you to be healthier or have it easier in the world. You don’t trust him with your whole self, how can you? You’ve tried so many therapists in the past and she’s not that bad, is she? You continue to hope that therapy with a therapist who doesn’t quite get it will be enough to meet your needs. It’s not enough. You deserve a therapist who understands your lived experiences. You deserve a therapist who knows what it’s like to have your doctor prescribe weight loss to treat arthritis in your wrists, and who can truly hear it when you tell them about your experience with your homophobic aunt at Thanksgiving. You deserve a therapist who approaches the world with a solid intersectional anti-oppression framework that sees society, rather than some flaw in you, as the central piece of your problem. I can be that therapist. I’m fat, I’m queer, I have an intersectional lens, and I want to dismantle systems of oppression one client session at a time.

Hi!! My name is Melissa Urbanek. I am a therapist that specializes in working with children, teens, college students and young adults. My practice is telehealth only that serves clients in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Do you feel exhausted from trying to hold everything together? Maybe you have always been the responsible one or the person others rely on. You pushed through stress, anxiety, and family challenges because you felt like you had to. At first it seemed manageable, but now the pressure feels heavier and harder to carry. On the outside you appear confident and put together. Inside you might feel overwhelmed, burnt out, or worried that you cannot keep this up much longer. Wanting a break does not mean you are failing. It means you are human. I’m Sara, and I help students who are tired of perfectionism, constant pressure, and the weight of expectations. I work with people who want healthier relationships, better communication, and support as they process past experiences that still affect them today. My background includes ACT, CBT, TF-CBT, Brainspotting, and group therapy training, which allows me to tailor our work to what you need. In our sessions, you can expect a warm, honest, and real environment where you can finally let your guard down. I show up as myself so you can feel comfortable showing up as yourself too. You deserve a space where you can put down the pressure you have been carrying and focus on feeling grounded, supported, and hopeful. I am here to help you get there.
If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or lost - I can help. You may be experiencing a major shift in your life or identity. Maybe you feel trapped by your circumstances, or even by your family. Therapy can be a great step towards learning the factors that led to your current situation, and the steps you can take to chart a new path. I am skilled at seeing things from multiple perspective and helping others do the same. I can offer compassion, and a new lens through which to view your life and your situation. I have training, education, and experience, but you are the expert on yourself. I will help you find your own solutions and perspectives to move forward.
I'm Julie TenBrook, PHMNP. I'm the owner of Open Minds. Open Minds symbolizes acceptance, on my part, of who you are without judgement. It, also, symbolizes the opening of your mind to change and healing. Being in college is a time of rapid growth. This can be hard. Figuring out how to navigate school, new relationships, new routines and define who you are as a young adult can be stressful. If you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and anxious, I can help. Treatment is tailored to what you need. It is usually multi-modal and not "just" medications or "just" therapy. Everyone's needs are different and we can design a treatment plan that fits you.
We want to provide you with what you need; tell us! We have a mix of providers that are fun-loving, sarcastic, serious, holistic, and trained in different areas of mental health! Our providers are so smart they also know a few different languages such as Spanish, Hmong, Amharic, and Omoro. We can't wait to hear from you!
Most of the students I work with are figuring out who they are while juggling school, family, friendships, and their future. Many feel the weight of being “the strong one” for everyone else, but behind closed doors they’re tired, anxious, or questioning if they’re enough. Some are navigating being away from home for the first time, carrying family expectations, or balancing the pressure to succeed with the need to just breathe. Others feel out of place on campus and want a space where they don’t have to explain themselves or code-switch. I connect best with young people under 25 who are ready for honest conversations, who value a therapist that will both listen deeply and challenge them to grow. My goal is to give you room to unpack your story, understand your emotions, and figure out how to move through stress, relationships, and identity with more clarity and confidence.
I’m a Clinical Psychologist who works with a large number of students and early career professionals navigating a wide range of emotional and relational challenges. I offer both in-person and telehealth sessions for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship and family concerns, and identity-related questions. I believe that therapy is a collaborative and creative process that unfolds through developing a strong alliance with a therapist. I strive to provide a warm, supportive, and nonjudgemental space for people to name, feel, and share their unique experiences. Although it can be difficult to put your emotional life into words, the decision to do so has the power to open up new ways of knowing and understanding yourself. It can also reveal patterns in your life that you might wish to explore in order to create space for more meaningful and satisfying possibilities. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation, please feel free to reach out.

We have been taught that emotions are not meant to be felt but rather controlled. To hide the bad ones and only show the good ones. That sitting in them for too long means we are either dramatic, obsessive, or abnormal. If you have ever been told, either by others in your life or you yourself, that your emotions are too much or too complicated, I would like to say, “I hear you, and I am here for you.” In our sessions I would like to provide you with an environment where your emotional expression is celebrated and not reprimanded as I believe we can begin to heal once we have allowed ourselves to fully feel, without judgment or policing. Whether that is guilt, shame, sadness, anger, grief, anxiousness, and anything in between, we can work on processing them together at your own pace. I know that starting therapy can be a daunting and overwhelming task. However, getting the help you deserve and finding a therapist that fits your needs is already the first step!
College and young adult years can be both exciting and overwhelming. Many students and young adults find themselves managing anxiety, depression, or grief while also trying to keep up with academic demands, relationships, work, and expectations from family or themselves. Feeling stressed, burned out, unmotivated, or emotionally drained does not mean you are failing — it means you are human and navigating a lot at once. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling. I work with college students, young adults, and adolescents using a client-centered, goal-oriented approach. Therapy is a collaborative process where we focus on what feels most pressing for you and develop practical strategies to help you cope more effectively with stress, emotions, and life transitions. I support individuals experiencing: * Anxiety and depression related to academic pressure, performance stress, and major life changes * Grief and loss, including losses that occur during college or early adulthood * Emotional overwhelm, burnout, difficulty with focus, and feeling “stuck” or disconnected * Relationship and family stress, especially as roles, independence, and boundaries shift * Autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and behavioral concerns in adolescents and young adults I use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and stress-reduction techniques to help clients build coping skills, improve emotional regulation, and gain clarity during challenging seasons. Therapy should feel supportive, nonjudgmental, and empowering. Whether this is your first time seeking counseling or you are returning to therapy, my goal is to create a space where you feel heard, understood, and supported as you work toward balance, confidence, and improved well-being.
