Therapists for college students near New York University
As a counselor, my priority is to create a collaborative, safe, and judgment-free space where you feel fully supported. My goal is to help you become the person you want to be and to work with you toward achieving the goals that matter most to you. I believe the most effective therapy integrates both past and present—exploring how past experiences shape current challenges, while actively practicing new strategies in and outside of sessions to create change. Throughout my career, I’ve helped clients facing a wide range of challenges. My main areas of focus include substance abuse and addiction, trauma/PTSD, ADHD, career and life transitions, and men's mental health. What this means is I provide support around addiction, trauma, and men’s mental health—and the many issues connected to them. With 5+ years of experience as a therapist and life coach, I’ve successfully helped clients from age 14-50 navigate ADHD, executive functioning, career issues, personality disorders, relationship issues, grief and loss, and much more. I am also partnered with a Ketamine-care practice, and along with their prescribers I offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. To make an appointment for either a 15-min free consultation call or an hour long initial session, please use the link below. I am available Monday through Thursday both in-person and virtually. mindfulmentalhealth.clientsecure.me/ Insurance companies unethically force therapists to give a diagnosis after one session with a client, & they also do not maintain high enough standards of confidentiality and data safety. I do not accept insurance to avoid these issues, but I will help you get reimbursed using your Out Of Network benefits. Clients are normally reimbursed for up to 80% of the therapy cost!
My philosophy of therapy is collaborative and holistic, and I aim to meet my clients where they’re at to inspire change. I am most passionate about working with queer people who have difficulty being fully authentic. We can work together to dismantle the stories and systems that have impacted this and cultivate greater self-compassion and self-awareness in who you are. In therapy with me, my clients feel seen and encouraged to show up as their authentic selves. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my expertise is in relationships and seeing things through a systemic lens. I have experience working with folks with anxiety or depression that can interrupt their ability to live a full life, sometimes facing unsteady relationships and hoping for more security. Together, we can work to make sense of difficult relationships, own and advocate for your feelings and needs in relationships, and identify and set boundaries with others. My experience is in working with teens and adults in the context of individual, couples, or family therapy.
We keep therapy simple so everyone can get the support they need without judgment or labels. It doesn’t matter how big or small your concern is — if there’s something that’s getting in the way of your health and happiness, our therapists are here to help. You may be surviving and going through the motions of daily life, but we think you deserve more.
Starting therapy can be difficult, and I strive to create a warm, collaborative and nonjudgmental space in which you can safely explore yourself and how you relate to others, and work through current challenges and obstacles in your life. I am a Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst with over 25 years of experience helping college and graduate students with anxiety, depression, eating/body image issues, family and relationship difficulties, trauma, identity issues, career concerns, and life transitions. In addition to my private practice, I have worked in college counseling centers.
TriBeCa Therapy is a center for psychotherapy that was founded on the assumption that human beings are original, imaginative, inspired, and inventive. We particularly love our work with young adults and college students and are connected to issues they deal with. Issues related to sex and dating, drugs and drinking, depression and anxiety and academic pressures aren’t topics that will freak us out. We can handle it. College students frequently discuss with us challenges such as: making friends in ways that don’t involve alcohol, making friends as a person of color, navigating social situations that demand connecting with strangers (like in the cafeteria) and finding “their people.” We work to create a partnership that takes these challenges on together, trying new strategies, taking increasingly bigger risks and dealing with the disappointments and celebrating the successes that follow. College is a time when many young adults are dealing with very adults issues like sex, sexual assault, eating disorders, substance abuse, managing money, race, class, and career choices. Creating a space where young adults feel comfortable talking about these issues is a strength of our therapists and a non-judgmental stance is key. The object isn’t to insist on a particular set of values or practices, but to support young people to understand what they are dealing with and to make active choices about who they want to be. I view the therapeutic relationship as similar to canoeing - it requires you to provide the steering, while I supply the momentum, and motivation and commitment from both of us to get to the destination. In our work together, I believe in giving you space to explore your story, as it was, as it is, as you want it to be, in a safe, supportive, empowering way that will, in time, allow you to feel confident and secure within your mind, body, and relationships. Within my practice, I utilize eco-therapy as a means to build an objective, curious, and comfortable relationship with the physical world around us, in order to practice building that same relationship within ourselves and with the people around us. It can feel so easy to get swept up in judgemental, shame-based thoughts, creating false perceptions, emotional pain and isolation. And yet, in the same way we prepare for cold winter nights or sweltering summer heat, so too can we weather the storms of our social and emotional worlds. To orient our work towards achieving your therapeutic goals, I work with Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, existential therapy, somatic therapy, animal therapy, ecotherapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, CBT and mindfulness practices. Utilizing this interdisciplinary blend we can identify and work through the obstacles to then find ways to move forward and love yourself into creating your ideal reality. I accept individuals, couples and families of all genders, identities, religions, and backgrounds. With a client-centered approach I believe you are the greatest expert of your own life, and in order to effectively row this canoe I ask for trust, honesty, commitment, curiosity, and engagement, so I, in return, will provide compassion, patience, knowledge, and reflection.
My guide in counseling is to create a safe and welcoming environment that promotes autonomy, open and honest communication and support to be who you are, where you are while working on where you want to be. For many, the notion of therapy implies that “something is wrong” when it is quite the opposite. The clarity it takes to acknowledge, accept and receive therapy or ‘mind maintenance’ as I like to call it, means you are self-aware, and there is nothing wrong with that. I specialize in a bad day with academic stress, social anxiety and depression but I can also work with a good day!
Hey, there. My name is Sam Silor (she/they) and I’m an NYC-based mental health counselor originally hailing from sun-soaked Alabama. As a queer, LGBTQ+ identifying therapist, I’m uniquely committed to approaching my work with genuine compassion and affirmation. A fusion of southern warmth and NYC grit, my practice will help guide you in exploring your most authentic self. Let’s get curious together!
Welcome! I am a clinical psychologist and drama therapist, seeing individuals and couples in New York. I work with adults and teens ages 15+. Clients I work with are often seeking to reduce distress, trust themselves more, and feel more equipped in their life journeys. A primary aim of treatment is to increase self-awareness and connection to the body, freeing a more expansive self, and allowing old patterns and obstacles (i.e. emotional avoidance, self-criticism) to melt away. Therapy can help reveal how your past is impacting your present, which often leads to self-compassion, and healing and change in the present. Perhaps you are wanting to feel more comfortable with the unknown, whether that be challenging emotions, uncertainty about the future, or existential questions, like what is the meaning of my one precious life? We are living through uncertain times collectively and individually, and therapy with me is a space where these questions are welcomed. I believe the therapeutic relationship is at the heart of healing, and I show up in the room with warmth and authenticity. My approach is integrative. I have advanced training in an attachment-based psychodynamic approach called Interpersonal Reconstructive Therapy, and in experiential, creative, somatic-based approaches including drama therapy and internal family systems. I also practice mindfulness and am an artist myself, and this informs the work I do. My approach is person-centered, which means I adapt treatment based on the unique individual(s) I am sitting with. I have extensive experience in working with LGBTQ+ clients, those with a history of trauma, folks navigating illness, and other healers and artists. I am part of Mount Sinai Health Partners, and remain involved in training of doctoral trainees at Mount Sinai. I am presently on the faculty of the NYU Masters in Drama Therapy program, and was previously an Assistant Professor in the Psychiatry Department at Mount Sinai. I have worked and trained in hospitals, including in adult and adolescent transgender healthcare, in outpatient centers, Veterans hospitals, and counseling centers.
Dr. Marguerat Degaard is a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Her academic journey started in Switzerland with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Geneva. Wanting to combine her passion for dance and the art of therapy, she came to the US and obtained a Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy in 1986 from Hunter College, NYC. She worked as a Dance Therapist for 14 years, developing, implementing and supervising creative art therapies programs. In 2005 Dr. Marguerat Degaard received her PhD from Adelphi University. Since then she worked in hospital settings adding teaching and training to her work as a clinician. Throughout the years, she continued to receive education and training in different areas of interest. She has been in private practice part time and full time since 2015. Her approach is integrative and flexible greatly influenced and informed by her artistic background. Her many years of work in the mental health field has taught her profound humility in the face of the deepest layers of humanity. She views psychotherapy as an in-depth collaborative and creative process which expands and frees self-expressions allowing untold stories to be told, contradictions to be bridged, and emotions to be touched or re-touched towards richer and healthier self-understanding and life experiences. She offers psychotherapeutic services in English and French. Her method will encourage and mobilize what she calls the 3 Cs in her patients, i.e. courage, curiosity and creativity. She will support the courage it takes to embark on the therapeutic journey, she will foster a deep sense of curiosity in one’s experiences that help shape one’s humanity through self-reflection and self-exploration work, and the use of creativity to allow new spaces to open and be expanded.
I am a clinical psychologist working with emerging adults and couples, specializing in issues around gender and sexuality as well as creativity and artistic identity. In practice, I believe in the utility of a strong working alliance, and strive to make you feel both understood and empowered throughout the evolution of treatment. While psychodynamic in orientation, I view my practice as integrative. Looking at patterns present in affect, behavior, and cognition, as well as through interpersonal experience, I endeavor to meet each patient where they are. I have extensive experience in couples and group therapy, particularly with non-monogamous and queer-identified populations. My clinical approach is informed by Emotion Focused Psychotherapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness. At the same time, developmental history and early attachment patterns remain fundamental to my understanding of people. I view it as an immense privilege, coupled with high responsibility, to be entrusted with someone’s vulnerability. I earned my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at CUNY City College. I also hold a Masters in Violin Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where I subsequently served as a therapist in residence. I was formerly a violinist in the NYC-based quartet, ETHEL. My musical background and capacity for self-observation continue to inform my practice as a therapist. It is my experience that therapy provides a valuable stage, one on which you and I can imagine a different repertoire of human experience together.

Life is full of constant change that we are learning how to navigate every day. Often, adjusting to these changes can bring up a range of emotions including anxiety, depression, and self-doubt. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone has the potential and ability to adapt to these ever-changing challenges in constructive ways that allow them to expand their lives. Our therapeutic relationship would be a source of kindness, calmness, and empowerment in your life. My hope is that therapy can be a safe space for you to share and clarify your values and motivations. By exploring your current habits and patterns, we can bring awareness to what is working well for you and transform the less effective methods into constructive actions that help bring you closer to feeling your best. I understand that reaching out for therapy can feel a little intimidating, especially if it’s your first time. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you might have or to schedule a free consultation before starting therapy together. I am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling and am training as an Advanced Clinical Trainee at Mindful Mental Health Counseling & Wellness, located in midtown Manhattan. I’m available to work together both in-person and remotely. Supervising Therapist: Tricia Schwartz, LMHC, Mindful Mental Health Counseling.
